A factory water audit deals with a far busier water picture than an office. Here water is doing real work: feeding processes, cooling plant, washing down lines, raising steam and carrying away effluent. That variety is exactly why factories so often overspend — consumption is spread across many systems, sub-metering is patchy, and a leak on a large distribution network can run for months inside the noise of normal production. Water optimisation on a factory site is about understanding each demand separately, then trimming each one.

Process water and recovery

The biggest savings on a factory site usually come from process and cooling water. Once-through cooling — where mains water passes through plant once and goes straight to drain — is both expensive and easy to improve, often by recirculating through a tower or recovering heat and water together. Rinse water can frequently be cascaded, reused or counter-flowed so that the cleanest demand draws on water that has already done a less-demanding job. We quantify each option against the cost of the equipment so you can see the payback before committing.

Trade effluent and return-to-sewer

Factories frequently pay sewerage charges on water that never reaches the public sewer — water that leaves in the product, evaporates from a process or is collected and tankered away. A return-to-sewer allowance corrects this, and on a high-volume site the rebate can be substantial, often backdated. Where you discharge trade effluent, we check that you are charged on the correct strength and volume, as errors in the effluent formula can quietly inflate the bill for years.

Sub-metering: the foundation

You cannot optimise what you cannot see. Most factory audits recommend a sensible sub-metering strategy so that cooling, process, wash-down and welfare demands are measured separately. With that visibility, abnormal consumption stands out immediately and savings can be verified rather than assumed. Process water is where the money is

In a factory the washrooms are rarely the story. The volumes that matter flow through processes: washdown, cooling, rinsing, heating and the services that support them. Because these uses are large and technical, the waste in them is both bigger and better hidden than anything in an office — a cooling tower bleeding too hard or a rinse running continuously can dwarf every other use on site.

Recovery and reuse

The biggest industrial savings often come not from using less at the tap but from using the same water twice. Capturing final rinse water for first wash, recovering condensate, or reusing cooling blowdown can cut both the water bought and the effluent discharged. We flag where reuse is realistic for your process rather than recommending it everywhere.
